THEMS FIGHTIN' WORDS

Sooooooo….it's Monday.
This weekend was unreasonably non-existent. I was JUST fucking HERE (not like fucking, but fucking...here).... I am now having feelings of anxiousness mixed with self-loathing…kind of like how I felt at the Mountain Goats show this weekend!
WAIT FOR IT... Now, I know many of you are FANS (Fanatic being defined as a person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause) of the Mountain Goats…or as stated, the "cause" of the Mountain Goats…
BUT FOR ME…the show was void of sentiment, invaded by irony…misfits guiding each other through the extraordinary….only to end up exhaustingly ORDINARY.
The opening act (German electro pop by Barbara Morgenstern) was a cute accented lady who displayed the humility I craved throughout and although completed a cartwheel on stage, was by no means talented enough to warrant my $14.50.
ALTHOUGH: I have not yet fully articulated, even to myself, what I really THINK about this show. It begins with a surplus of emotions ranging from John Darnielle convincing me he's some kind of autistic cult master to the reconstructed feeling of being ostracized by the MG click, perhaps similar to the click John himself was left out of thus inspiring his future kingdom of lyrics. Additionally, when ONE (being ME) all of the sudden REALIZES their surroundings... somehow channeling UNDERSTANDING if just for a moment…and this moment happens simultaneous to a room full of people singing "I hope you die, I hope we both die"…
ONE can relate to how it may be a little DISCONCERTING…right?

BUT: These fighting words do not dismiss my cross country moments with MG… me at the wheel...hypnotized by the sunshine and asphalt…John elevating my senses through reckless detailed adventures only visible through his specialized relationship microscope. His songwriting combines the cliché with the unpredictable…it's his execution that makes me feel funny.
OVERALL: John Darneille knows exactly what he's doing. He enjoys (sick or not) watching his FANS sing along as if everyone were in a Coke commercial. He intellectually understands his own shtick and controls every seemingly kooky twitchy movement…like a well written article or a provocative installation piece, the interaction between him and his fans IS his art…but I fear (as with many artists) he's the only one getting the joke.

AFTER THE SHOW: About 75 naked bike riders whizzed by on Burnside…random acts of meaningless protest plague us PEOPLE…we will soon be reduced to emoticons… forever cemented in time with our proverbial tongue's sticking out...void of the idealized danger of Lou Reed or the subversive poetry of Belle and Sebastian…we are naked, staring up, straining our necks, bobbing our heads and singing along to the triviality of encouraged cynicism and hidden irony....
:P
