suggestions for what to do in the time between getting home from work and going back to work again the next day...

a few visual recommendations from mwah:

Weeds Season 4 . I remember an interview from a previous season with the creator Jenji Kohan; she stated that she couldn't believe "they" were letting her create a show about marijuana so in that disbelief she decided to push the envelope as far as she could. Dealing with issues such as immigration and the desire to fuck your mother, Season 4 really (as Monster Martini says) "Doesn't disappoint".

Last night we saw Wendy and Lucy directed by Kelly Reichardt who also directed Oldjoy one of my favs from 2006 (watched it in Balmer and longed achingly for the NW) . Definitely (although not necessarily enthusiastically) a thumbs up from me. Reichardt knows her shit. She opens with a voyeuristic long shot of the protagonist playing with her dog, a female humming in close range that creates non-cliche tension surrounding what will happen next. She then leaves scenes long and let's the viewer see all human actions, fumbling with keys, washing hands, etc. Overall her filmmaking seems DIY and gritty but is carried off with a certain ease. Although her geography references are way off, she makes PDX look like a sparse, run down mill town, ahh the good ole' days.

This film, like OldJoy, has an actual mood which frankly, is hard to achieve these days. (see David Lynch for a more extreme example). It's simple, sweet, and borders on abject; however, this film in particular is also extremely timely. With interesting moments of tenderness and reflection on simplicity of devotion, this movie deals with a lost generation, the recession, homelessness, individuality, and isolation. I basically cried the whole time but that might be because I'm a big baby.

Anyway. Go see it. Eat pizza, drink beer. I think it really hits an abstraction relating to our lost in the abyss generation, affected only by systems, lacking in the confidence to affect the world, estranged from each other and ultimately alone.

fun.
